Dear SMCLA Members and Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Directors for Social Media Club Los Angeles (SMCLA), I would like to introduce you to and welcome you to our 2017 series of panels and networking events.

If you are unfamiliar with SMCLA, we are a local chapter of a national nonprofit that’s dedicated to promoting digital literacy and best practices. We host monthly panels on social media and marketing topics and networking events and our Board of Directors is a volunteer based Board comprised of Social Media, Marketing, and PR professionals.

Last year, we formed a partnership with General Assembly (GA) and we will be continuing this relationship for 2017. All of our events (minus our networking happy hours) will now be hosted at GA’s Santa Monica or Downtown LA locations. We are very grateful to be working with a wonderful organization like GA and to have such great locations for our panels and workshops. The Santa Monica location is right around the corner from Third Street Promenade and the newly opened Downtown LA location is in the heart of Little Tokyo.

This year, we are focused on bringing you a calendar of events that is packed with information we believe you want to and should know about. Here’s a sneak peak into our first couple of events:

SMCLA Blog Q&A with OXiGEN

oxigen logoSocial Media Club and Social Media Club Los Angeles (SMCLA) are non-profit organizations. To be able to provide quality programming and events, we have companies sponsor us throughout the year.

This year, we are very excited to announce that OXiGEN is the water sponsor for all our events. To get to know OXiGEN a little bit better, we interviewed the vice president of marketing and communications, Rebecca Peters.

When was OXiGEN founded and why? What is the story behind the launch of the brand?

OXiGEN was founded in mid-2014 after we discovered we had the ability to bring to market the first ready-to-drink oxygenated water that actually works! On shelves since November 2015, our product contains an O4 oxygen molecule that’s highly stable, meaning we get it to stay in the water. It doesn’t go “poof” out the top of the bottle when it’s opened like regular O2 oxygen does when you add it to bottled water.  We all know that oxygen and water are vital to sustain life and added oxygen has so many benefits. We wanted to bring those benefits to the masses through our product.

What three words would you use to describe the brand?

How important is social media and digital marketing to OXiGEN’s overall business strategy?

Extremely important. Social and digital media is how we (consumers) get our information about everything, including new products, and social media allows us to easily educate ourselves on a large scale in real-time. OXiGEN has a great story and we use social and digital not only to tell our own story, but also to allow others to tell our story for us. 

What do you hope to gain, or have you already gained, by implementing social and digital marketing initiatives? 

We love our product and want as many people to know about it as possible, while at the same time ensuring they are educated about the “why” behind it. Why they should pick up OXiGEN versus any other water brand — or any other beverage brand for that matter! Why they should incorporate OXiGEN water and shot into their day and what it can mean for their general sense of well-being. Social and digital marketing allows us to do this at a level of intimacy that wasn’t previously possible. It also allows us, as mentioned before, to find people who believe in us and want to help spread the word about us.

Are there any emerging social platforms or digital tools that you are most excited to test in 2017? 

We are still a young brand in the midst of honing in on what really works to get people interested in engaging with us and about us. I’m excited to watch how this evolves in 2017 on all the social channels we’re involved in. Our team at Social Reality has done an amazing job in a very short time, so I’m looking forward to watching our progress over the next 6 to 12 months.

Why are you excited to be involved with SMCLA this year? 

We are happy to be partnering with Social Media Club Los Angeles this year for many reasons. One of which is the opportunity to get our product in the hands of professionals in the Los Angeles area who work tirelessly to run their businesses and/or serve their clients – they deserve a dose of mental clarity and recovery! Secondly, we are passionate about being incorporated into the communities in which our products are sold. Southern California is a key market for us as we are sold in many Vons, Gelson’s, Bristol Farms and Albertsons locations here.

SMCLA 2017 Nominations Now Open

SMCLA Elections 2016 2017Every good group is run by great leadership. Social Media Club LA is no different and this is why we have an election process to set the Club’s leadership for the upcoming year.

We are looking forward to working with returning and new board members who bring enthusiasm, teamwork and a fresh perspective to serving the Los Angeles chapter!

November marks the start of this process and we highly encourage anyone interested in participating in SMCLA to please nominate themselves by clicking the button above or here. Please indicate your name, age, and rank… no, that’s not right in this situation. Just fill out the form… it’s quick, easy, and relatively painless.

These are some examples of areas of interest, aka “Committees” that you can be involved with and help guide in 2017:

And, a few commonly asked questions:

Who can apply for nomination?

Any community member in good standing may apply. While we prefer that the candidate is currently registered as a paid member of Social Media Club (socialmediaclub.org/membership), it is not a requirement for a nominee for the 2016 board, as long as that person joins after their election.

It is also strongly preferred that you have attended one or more SMCLA events. If you have not, but are still interested in serving on the board, please consider volunteering to help with an event soon. Committee work is excellent preparation for board membership.

What are team Directors?

Each board committee has a team lead, or Director, who helps ensure each committee runs smoothly and acts as leader. FYI, the other committee members are called Associate Directors.

How long is the service term?

Officers will be elected on an annual basis and will serve a one-year term.

How much time commitment is required?

SMCLA has a working board, and all Directors and Associate Directors are expected to donate their time to support chapter activities. Our goal is to conduct weekly or bi-weekly board meetings via phone, and require assistance by all team members to support each chapter event — we host a combination of educational and networking programs throughout the year. There are typically quarterly in-person Board meetings but that is at the discretion of the President.

Can I nominate myself?

Yes! Please do! You can actually do that right here.

How will the board be selected?

A nominating committee will distribute a slate of candidates in the form of a ballot to all chapter members in late November. Ballots must be returned to the committee two weeks later.

How do I get started?

We encourage you to become more involved in the chapter and share your ideas with your board. The first step is to nominate yourself, a friend or colleague and/or another chapter member to serve on the board for the 2016 year!
